A Fall Day at the River Land and Farm

A Fall Day at the River Land and Farm

We used to take walks around our river land and the farm all the time, back when our kids first came to live with us and especially during the pandemic. Both places were our refuges, our escapes. We haven’t been out to the river land in what seems like years, so this weekend we drove out there before heading to the farm.

It was warm and breezy, and it had been so long since we’d been at the river land that the kids acted like it was the first time they had ever seen it. They climbed trees and branches and wandered all around in amazement. Riah found a turtle shell. It was total bliss.

At the farm, we all took a walk with Josie (our mini pot belly pig) around the pasture, saying hi to the donkeys and the sheep along the way. As the sun was setting, we made our way back to the tiny house and lit a fire at the pavilion and made s’mores and ate leftover chicken tortilla soup. It felt like the right thing to do as the sun went down and the temps got cooler.

All five of us sat around the fire and listened to Christmas music while the kids laughed and for a moment, the world was perfect and nothing bad could ever happen.

And then we packed up and drove back home. After all these years, the farm is still our escape from the outside world.
